Hall baths are usually the smallest room in the house and the one that has to work hardest — kids, guests, and everyday traffic, all through one door.
They are also where the most space gets wasted. A vanity sized for a room twice as big, a linen closet eating the only clear floor, a door that swings into the one place you would want to stand. Reworking the layout tends to buy more than new finishes do, and it costs less than people expect while the walls are already open.
Everything behind the tile gets rebuilt rather than covered over. Tiling on top of a failed surround is the cheapest thing a contractor can do and the most expensive thing a homeowner can pay for twice.
