Built-ins are one of the few things you can add to a house that have to look like they were always there. That is the whole test, and it is decided by details most people never consciously notice.
Walls are never square, especially in an older house, so cabinetry gets scribed to what is actually there rather than to what the drawing says. Trim profiles get matched to the rest of the room instead of to whatever the supplier stocks. Reveals stay consistent from one end of the run to the other, and the paint finish is built up so the grain does not telegraph through.
A fireplace wall is usually the first thing you see entering a room, and often the least resolved — an odd expanse of drywall with a television floating on it. Framing it properly turns the awkward wall into the one the room is arranged around.
